Chamber to increase efforts to develop downtown

Tulsa Metro Chamber is creating a downtown development program as a part of its economic development division.

“With projects like ONEOK Field, BOK Center and the newly remodeled Tulsa Convention Center, it is an ideal time to capitalize on development potential in the downtown area,” said Chamber President and CEO Mike Neal. “Study after study shows a strong, diverse downtown area is key to economic growth and job creation in a metro region.”

The Chamber is conducting a national search to hire an experienced program director with a successful track record of developing downtowns. The new director will lead the economic development division’s efforts to aggressively recruit developers interested in capital investment.

The Chamber’s downtown development staff will work closely with city officials to navigate building codes and regulations to ensure smooth, efficient and timely completion of projects. In addition, the Chamber will maintain involvement and interaction with the City of Tulsa’s Downtown Coordinating Council and other organizations with a mission directed toward the growth and improvement of downtown Tulsa.

The new program will cost an estimated $260,000 for the first year and will be funded through Tulsa’s Future, the chamber’s privately funded economic development program. The Chamber’s downtown efforts will be dedicated solely to development and will not manage parades, street cleaning or general maintenance.
