Legislators gather for 2011 session wrap-up, look to next year’s priorities

The Chamber hosted its third and final Legislative Briefing Breakfast of the 2011 legislative session Friday. Legislators recapped 2011 session legislation and offered thanks to the Chamber for its leadership and to its partners for a successful session.

“You all have done a tremendous job this year pushing a really tough agenda,” said Rep. Skye McNiel. “You have a fantastic lobbying team that’s on top of things and you all as a group are on top of things. I’m just pleased to be a part of this amazing group that is pushing Oklahoma, shooting us so far ahead of everyone else. It’s amazing the work that can be done when we all work together.”

Legislators also directed focus to next year’s issues and what will transpire in the interim. Most notably, Senate Pro Tempore Brian Bingman will host taskforce meetings aimed to research and prioritize bond requests, including the Chamber-supported request for a $40 million bond to establish the Oklahoma Museum of Music and Popular Culture (OK Pop) in downtown Tulsa.

The Chamber will work during the interim as well, organizing taskforce meetings to prioritize issues for the 2012 OneVoice legislative agenda. These taskforces are open to the public, and participants will gather to discuss and offer input to develop specific priorities in areas such as transportation, education, health care and more. These priorities will be presented at the Legislative Summit Aug. 11, where Chamber members, regional partners and business leaders will begin developing the 2012 regional OneVoice legislative agenda.

Pinto World Championship Show begins tomorrow

The Pinto Horse Association of America will host the World Championship Horse Show beginning tomorrow, June 7 at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at Expo Square.

Pintos of all classes will unite in Tulsa for the 12-day show commencing on June 18 and featuring the world's largest gathering of the Pinto breed. Produced by the Pinto Horse Association of America Inc., the competition will showcase talented horses, ponies and miniatures and their exhibitors in a wide array of disciplines including jumping, reining, driving, roping, pleasure and halter.

"The 12 days spent at the World Show are not just about competing," said Darrell Bilke, show manager and PtHA COO/executive vice president. "The show is also about fun, friendship, family and celebrating the Pinto breed."

The event, which has been hosted by Tulsa for more than 20 years, brings an estimated economic impact of $6.6 million and is one of the top revenue generating events for Expo Square and the surrounding community.

TYPros summer series connects interns, job seekers with tools, professionals

Tulsa’s Young Professionals’ ongoing Intern In Tulsa program will host its Summer Series beginning  June 10, giving summer interns and job seekers an opportunity to network and build connections with human resource professionals and hiring managers.

The three-part series will start with a networking event June 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Boulder Grill (17 W. Seventh St.), followed by a resume review session June 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Max Retropub (114 S. Elgin Ave.) and a feedback session with industry professionals June 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the OU-Tulsa Schusterman Center Perkins Auditorium (4502 E. 41st St.).

TYPros hosts the series annually and maintains the Intern In Tulsa program year-round, along with the website internintulsa.com, as part of its mission to attract and retain quality young professionals in the Tulsa metro region. TYPros also uses events and initiatives similar to the summer series to develop the quality of life that attracts young professionals.

“We want to see these interns stay here for longer than a semester,” said Brian Paschal, executive director of TYPros. “These are the high-quality, well-developed individuals that will carry Tulsa to the next level in the coming years. We want these interns and job seekers to have these types of events where they can come mingle, see what Tulsa’s Young Professionals has to offer, further develop their job search tool kit and be completely prepared to return to our metro upon graduation confident in their career’s success and Tulsa’s ability to offer quality lifestyle opportunities.”

Human resource and hiring managers are encouraged to take the opportunity to meet potential employees at the summer series as well. To post a flier for your interns, click here.

A few of the Tulsa-area U.S. Chamber Blue Ribbon Award recipients also attended, including Carey Dunkin Baker, a member of the Chamber’s Small Business Council and president and CEO of Part-Time Pros and Tulsa-Med Pros.

Business owners encouraged to join CEO Roundtable
Area business leaders are invited to sign up for the no-cost personal advisory groups

The Tulsa Metro Chamber’s Small Business Council started a new program last fall, and leaders of companies of every size are finding it extremely valuable for their businesses. CEO Roundtables are groups of eight non-competitive CEOs or equivalents who serve as each other’s advisory board and support unit. Roundtables are self-governing groups that meet monthly to share best practices and exchange ideas in a confidential setting.

“CEO Roundtable meetings allow the opportunity for sharing of common concerns and issues that all business leaders face,” said Jim Light, chair of the Small Business Council and owner of LaMode Quality Cleaners. “We hear from participants all the time about how much they are learning from each other in these groups.”

Roundtable participants can get much-needed encouragement, feedback and resources to potentially make them more successful as business leaders in today’s challenging environment.

Tulsa Metro Chamber provides a facilitator and group training but does not participate directly in the groups. Applicants for the groups must hold the position of CEO or the equivalent in their companies; the company must have been in existence for at least two years; the company must be a Tulsa Metro Chamber member in good standing; and the company must have minimum annual sales revenue of $250,000.

Groups are now forming, and training dates will be held throughout the year. There is no cost to participate. For more information, contact Kinnee Tilly at kinneetilly@tulsachamber.com.
